CHAPTER FIVETEEN
The alarm rang at 5.30am. Simon faced the clock. He hadnât gone back to sleep, incapable of forgetting the scene that had unfolded after Tolstoyâs men had burst onto the roof.
Simon had dropped below the roof ledge, hanging between the roof gutter and window architrave. He couldnât see anything but the sounds he could hear above him had told him all he needed to know. Idris was being murdered by Tolstoyâs men and Simon hadnât done anything to stop them.
Fear had gripped Simon as heâd clung to the building, like an insect scared of being squashed. He didnât know how long heâd stayed hidden. The cold of the night and the stiffness of his muscles had forced him to climb down as originally planned. It hadnât been a difficult descent and when he reached the ground, heâd entered the main building as though heâd just been out for a stroll.
He had seen on the way in that Volkovâs car had returned. Shame had hit him. When heâd returned to his bedroom, he hadnât seen any sign of interference. Tolstoy would have known Volkov was back, and that Simon was still off limits to the man. He wouldnât dare yet to have his fun the way he had with Idris.
Simon sat up and let his head drop into his hands. How long would he be able to hide who he truly was? He was no longer certain. Tears of rage stung his eyes.
He stood up abruptly, wiped them away on his T-shirt sleeve and moved to the bathroom. Idris would not die in vain. Simon would hold it together for as long as needed to reveal the Kremlinâs plan.
He undressed slowly and he thought of his mother. Would she also have to bury a son?
Simon sagged against the wall and dropped his jacket. He closed his eyes and Ritaâs warm smile beamed at him, as it always did whenever she saw him. It could be a minute, a day, or a month since theyâd last seen each other. She would always greet him with a smile. He knew it must be hard for her not to know where he was, but Evelina had warned him that he couldnât risk revealing where heâd be going or who he would be working with.
More tears stung his eyes and he muffled a final sob. He shook his head, took a few deep breaths, and dug deep to find the strength. He had come too far to crumble now.
Simon started tearing the rest of his clothes off â the hateful uniform he was being made to wear by this godforsaken group. He stepped into the shower and turned it to full. The heat energised him and when Simon stepped out, he was ready. He finished preparing for the trip to Moscow that he was due to accompany Volkov on.
When Simon arrived in the hallway of the main building Volkovâs driver was already there. He acknowledged Simon with a curt nod and both men waited until Volkov arrived.
